Love, Joy, Peace...
A Brief History of Beverly Hills Baptist Church
On Sunday afternoon, March 5, 1959, a group of believers from Pee Dee Baptist Church in Rockingham held a meeting in the home of Mrs. Viola Story and her daughter, Mrs. Betty Story Davis on Steele Street. With a vision and great faith, they desired God’s leadership in starting a new church. The Reverend Howard Benoy preached and presided over the meeting. A collection of $9.00 was received. On March 8, 1959, a meeting was held in the Story home and the forty-seven people attended voted to temporarily use the Holsom Bread Building, located at Five Points as their meeting place at a cost of $25.00 per month and would use Howard Spivey’s piano. A meeting was held on Sunday, May 10, 1959 for the purpose of organizing a church. The Reverend Robert Glazner, pastor of Cordova Baptist Church and moderator of the Pee Dee Baptist Association, conducted the service. Thirty-eight of those attending signed the charter when organized with thirteen additional signatures added during the thirty-day open period. The first meeting of the officially organized church was held in the rented Holsom Bread Building with the Reverend Benoy as pastor. A short time later, land was obtained from Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Key (Ruby Ligertwood) in the Beverly Hills Subdivision area. Ground breaking services for a new church building was held August 10, 1959 with thirty-one people present. Person was obtained from Mr. Herman Seawell, subdivision developer, to name the new church Beverly Hills Baptist Church. Dedication services were held in the new building on November 8, 1959. The building consisted of an auditorium, six classrooms, a nursery, a pastor’s study/office, and two restrooms. Beverly Hills Baptist Church became a member of the Pee Dee Baptist Association during the October 19, 1959 Associational meeting in Laurinburg, NC. The first convert after becoming an organized church was Nancy Davis (Hurst), daughter of the L.C. and Ethel Davis. The First Baptist Church in Rockingham provided their baptistery for the baptism. The marriage of Gloria Jean Kelly and Jerry C. Sheppard on October 29, 1961 was the first wedding ceremony in the new building. The church voted on March 3, 1960 to purchase a lot and building on Highway 220, now Ellerbe Road, for $6000 to be used for the church fellowship hall and other needed purposes. The present sanctuary was started in July 1963 and formal dedication services were held on Sunday, November 10, 1963. The cost of the sanctuary was $65,000 with Rockingham First Baptist Church donating all of the brick. The first baptismal service in the new sanctuary was held Sunday night, November 17, 1963 with Tina Jenkins (Graves), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Jenkins, being the first to be baptized. The first Deacon Ordination Service in the new sanctuary was on December 22, 1963 with Dillard Richardson being ordained. The educational building was added in 1968, also a parsonage in the Beverly Hills community was purchased. In the fall of 1974, the fellowship and recreation was added, consisting of a kitchen, large dining area, four classrooms, two restrooms and facilities for youth and adults to play basketball. The mural above the baptistery was hand painted by John Jenkins in 1976. The sanctuary was completely renovated in 1984 with beautiful stained glass windows added. Individual church members gave the windows in honor or memory of family members. Ground breaking services for a Family Life Center were on Sunday, November 2, 1997 and the dedication of the facility was celebrated February 7, 1999. A walk through drama, Judgement House, was the first special event held in the Family Life Center. The drama was scheduled for October 29-31, 1998. However, due to overwhelming requests, the drama was extended for several more days. Over one hundred and seventy-six plus souls were saved and hundreds of rededications. Believing nothing is too hard to do if our faith is strong and our purpose is true, we continue to serve the Lord
